I’ve long been a Southborder Fan, I think for 12 years now. I thought their songs sounded very different, very soulful, yet very pinoy…and so when my office barkada opened the topic on watching their show at the big dome, I immediately said: Yes! Let's Go!

Last Friday, I saw Southborder’s concert: Independent at the Araneta Coliseum. It was already 9 pm and they hadn’t dimmed the lights yet. My heart sank to see that only 2/3 of the Araneta was filled. Then again, they must've packed at least 6,000 seats that night (and peaked at around 8,000 during the middle of the show).

I was excited to see what type of arrangements Jay Durias would have. And I was also itching to see the 2 new guys perform at the big dome for the first time. Add to that, our former endorser, our very own Juris, and a former schoolmate were guests of that show.

The show started with their latest music video, the theme for the new fantasy show, SUGO. Then there was a solo portion for their lead guitarist, Butch Victoriano. It had some instrumental interspersing of the theme for Darna, and the 2 new guys started singing Ikaw Lang, theme song of the phenomenal tv show, Mulawin.

Then they did a couple of fast numbers from their latest album. The two guys sang these fast songs, while dancing and break-dancing…boy they were awesome!!! They took a “break” by singing some slow covers, including, Time Will Reveal and Tender Love. And their new slow songs: Wherever You Are and Too Crazy.

Then the female guests came out and sang their solos with Jay on the piano. Nikki sang I Miss You (Boys2Men version). From the first time I heard her sing our Jingle live in January’s Salu-Salo, I thought she was an “average singer”…nothing spectacular…and I guess I was right. And her all-brown "costume" didn't help increase the valuation of her solo performance.

Juris came out and Araneta was filled with screams. Yes, she hadn't sung yet...she was still moving to the center of the stage and already people from the Patron to the Upperbox section were screaming. The guys seated at our back were shouting: I LOVE YOU JURIS. I didn’t realize how popular she had become. We're talking 8,000 people in the Big Dome!

Juris, sang MYMP's signature hit: A Little Bit, and it was refreshing to hear a different version of the song. Although I thought Juris needed to work on her posture and stage presence…she looked quite nervous. Maybe because the Big Dome can really be intimidating, plus the fact that she's a Southborder Fan and she's performing with them. Remember the lyrics: I'm listening to Southborder, I am fanatic! ;o)

Finally, Jinky came out…and my, she lost weight. But as in highschool, she’s still baduy when it comes to dressing up. One thing you can say about Jinky is that she has really become a seasoned singer…she did a jazzed up version of So Slow and she did this effortlessly, as if Araneta were only her living room.

The girls also helped them out in singing their hit songs. Nikki did Tulog with Jay; I thought it would’ve been better if Jay sang alone.

Juris did Sa’yo with Vince and Duncan and that was the first time I heard her sing “birit” after highschool [the acoustic genre is quite limiting]. The song started with really low notes, and to avoid making it a dragging number, Juris added some drama by singing the low notes in a "whispering manner". But when she got to the second chorus where the notes were to be sung one octave higher, there was thundering scream from Araneta! She hit the notes and Araneta went gaga clapping and screaming for her. I was so proud of her!!! And I know you guys would've been so proud as well.

After Juris did her song, Jinky did Habang Atin ang Gabi alone. Everybody then sang Kahit Kailan…with Duncan hitting the high falsetto right on the dot. This medley of Southborder Hits, to me was the highlight of the show.

Afterwards the Boys did some fast numbers from Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dog, Black Eyed Peas and their very own The Show. After the fast numbers, the show ended. Of course, the crowd screamed more! More! And for the encore, they sang Rainbow.

Having been a fan of Southborder for almost 12 years, I can say that for as long as Jay is at the helm, the band will be alright. The guy is a superb musical arranger, an effective singer, and a true-blue Filipino songwriter. I think with the 2 new boys, Southborder has experienced a rebirth and was refueled.

Jay Durias announced that they will have a 12th year anniv. concert on July 15. I might watch again...especially if Juris is guesting. My, my, my, sikat na talaga ang batchmate natin!
